fair notes, day 1

August 27, 2004 06:16 PM

There’s no need for me to get too detailed here, as fred baby and Amy can be trusted to cover the fair like seasoned professionals, with passion, thoroughness, and fancy multimedia presentations. So I’ll keep my own dispatch brief. Here are my highlights of Opening Day:

  • Took the awesomely convenient Bus 960 from downtown to the fair grounds. Had my $7 (Thrifty Thursday!) ready before I got off.
  • Met Amy and fred baby and chatted politely for a few moments until Amy announced that she could wait approximately 30 more seconds before getting a corndog.
  • Corndog. Yum.
  • BUNNIES. Ludicrously cute. Completely beyond-the-reach-of-words cute.
  • Tried the Oven Fresh Brownie for the first time. Chocolatey goodness.
  • Discovered a new place with sweet potato pie. I intend to do a pie-by-pie comparison between this and the usual place. (By the big green-pepper-shaped stand. I think.) Full report to follow.
  • Decided that this year I would try a Rice Kristie bar for the first time. Now I just have to choose a flavor. But I’ve got until Labor Day.
  • Mini donuts. (Doughnuts? No. At the fair it’s all about economy of lettering. Sno Cones. Vegie Fries. Carmel Apples. Orange Treet. Okay, that last one doesn’t save any letters. But fred baby and Amy and I all liked it so much that I had to include it. And back to doughnuts, I get the “dough” part, but really: what’s nutty about them? Nothing! Because nutty do(ugh)nuts would be gross! And most troubling of all, how is it that I never thought to ask this question before? See how the fair expands your mind???)
  • Saw a kid with a stuffed gorilla about three times his size sitting on his shoulders. They bobbed down the street together quite happily.
  • Laughed at fred baby photo-documenting his trash. Laughed harder at the looks he was getting from passersby. Laughed at how hard Amy was laughing.

quote to go:

“That bite was too big.”

—Amy. Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
